Famous People in PHILOSOPHY
Below are three famous philosophers who studied philosophy. Philosophy is study of life, knowledge, and existence.
socratesSocrates taught by asking questions. He asked many, many questions, but answered few of them. When other people answered his questions, he challenged the answer with more questions.
Today, this is the Socratic method. He said that people should never stop looking for knowledge. The oracle of Delphi said that Socrates was the wisest man in Greece, but to this Socrates said that others had more knowledge than him, but he knew how little he knew. He did not write any books, as he believed argument was better than writing. Therefore, he traveled with his students, arguing about many topics. Socrates said that the gods were invented by poets. People did not like these new ideas brought in, He was brought to trial for neglecting the gods and bringing new ideas to the youth. He was found guilty, and was condemned to death. He calmly drank from a cup of poison that killed him. |
platoPlato was a student of Socrates. When Socrates was executed, Plato started The Academy- a school where students, philosophers and scientists discussed ideas or over 900 years. Plato wrote many books, but the most famous is the Republic. This book contained his ideas of an ideal society. he said that society should be a type of an oligarchy in which the wisest people ruled. He also believed the government should give all children equal chances. He wanted schools to have regular tests so it could be decided whether children continued their education or went to the workforce. He also thought truth and justice are not in the material world.

A Macedonian military leader named Philip II wished to invaded Greece. The Athenian army and he army of Thebes were defeated, and the rest of Greece consented to having Philip II as a leader. Before his death, Alexander worked to spread Greek culture into his empire. but let people keep their old ideas. This lead to a Hellenistic, or Greek-like culture.
After Alexander died, there was a struggle for power between his generals, so they split the empire into 3- one ruled Egypt, another Syria, and another Macedon and Greece.
